{"id":15655,"date":"2021-03-19T12:09:25","date_gmt":"2021-03-19T16:09:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/?p=15655"},"modified":"2022-01-12T12:06:58","modified_gmt":"2022-01-12T17:06:58","slug":"contract-tracing-an-important-tool-in-fighting-covid-19-as-vaccinations-pick-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/2021\/03\/contract-tracing-an-important-tool-in-fighting-covid-19-as-vaccinations-pick-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Contact Tracing: An Important Tool in Fighting COVID-19 as Vaccinations Pick Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/orange.floridahealth.gov\/\">Florida Department of Health in Orange County<\/a> (DOH-Orange) is helping slow the spread of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocfl.net\/covid19\">COVID-19<\/a> in the region by performing contact tracing, a critical public health strategy that involves identifying people who may have been in close contact with an individual who has COVID-19. Contact tracing lets people know they may have been exposed to SARS-CoV-2 and should monitor their health for signs and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/symptoms-testing\/symptoms.html\">symptoms<\/a>\u00a0of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany communicable diseases, including COVID-19, can be spread by people who don\u2019t appear to be sick,\u201d explained Alvina Chu, DOH-Orange County Epidemiology Program Manager. \u201cSince these individuals feel well, they\u2019re unlikely to get tested and may not know they\u2019re carrying the virus. Contact tracing helps us learn who these asymptomatic carriers are so they can be informed about appropriate prevention measures, including testing and self-isolation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Contact tracing has been used during outbreaks of sexually transmitted infections, Ebola, measles, and now COVID-19. The job of the contract tracer is to collect information and provide guidance to help contain the transmission of disease, help those who may have been exposed get tested, and ask people to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/if-you-are-sick\/isolation.html\">self-isolate<\/a> or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/if-you-are-sick\/quarantine.html\">self-quarantine<\/a>\u00a0if they are an exposed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/php\/contact-tracing\/contact-tracing-plan\/appendix.html#contact\">close contact<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reach out to patients who test positive and ask them questions about symptoms, exposure history and also offer guidance,\u201d explained Shayla Rhodes, contact tracer with the DOH-Orange County. \u201cBy asking these questions, we\u2019re able to create a list of places and people they\u2019ve been in contact with and give their exposed close contacts the appropriate precautions to take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rhodes is part of the DOH\u2019s COVID-19 team and has been trained to perform contact tracing specifically for COVID-19. The information she and her team collect is given to DOH epidemiologists who look for trends and attempt to slow down the virus\u2019s spread, which is why obtaining accurate information is imperative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen someone is asymptomatic but infectious, getting a call from us often catches them off guard,\u201d explained Ciara Williamson, contact tracer with the DOH-Orange County. \u201cWe\u2019re contacting people who literally have no clue they\u2019ve been exposed, so they\u2019re usually thankful for the call, but also shocked and concerned at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williamson admits that although the questions they ask are not too personal, people can feel uncomfortable giving out information over the phone, especially to a stranger, but part of a contact tracers\u2019 job is to remain diligent. \u201cTalking to people under these circumstances can be tricky, but it gives me a sense of satisfaction knowing I helped them,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s great to be part of a team that helps provide support to the community during this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For updates on COVID-19, including testing and vaccination sites, go to <a href=\"http:\/\/orange.floridahealth.gov\/\">Florida Department of Health in Orange County<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orangecountyfl.net\/EmergencySafety\/Coronavirus.aspx\">Orange County Government<\/a>.
