Finding a way to provide for the needs of older Americans will be a challenge. In order to address this, Orange County has launched an Age-Friendly Initiative with the hope of building communities that meet the needs of local residents as they grow older. \u00a0The ultimate goal is to receive the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/livable-communities\/network-age-friendly-communities\/\">AARP designation as an \u201cAARP Livable Community.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The initiative is a grassroots effort to engage local residents of all ages and encourage them to share their thoughts in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocfl.net\/age-friendly\">Livable Communities Survey<\/a>. The goal of the survey is to analyze how effectively the County is meeting the eight AARP domains of livability which include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Civic participation and employment<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-17134\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/OCFL093021-0255-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Man at podium speaking to seniors \" width=\"383\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/OCFL093021-0255-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/OCFL093021-0255-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/OCFL093021-0255-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/OCFL093021-0255-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/OCFL093021-0255-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/OCFL093021-0255-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/OCFL093021-0255-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/OCFL093021-0255-785x523.jpg 785w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Respect and social inclusion<\/li>\n<li>Communication and information<\/li>\n<li>Outdoor spaces and buildings<\/li>\n<li>Community support and health services<\/li>\n<li>Social participation<\/li>\n<li>Transportation<\/li>\n<li>Housing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cNobody was looking at this issue 20 years ago,\u201d explained Lavon Williams, manager of <a href=\"http:\/\/orangecountyfl.net\/FamiliesHealthSocialSvcs\/CommunityActionDivision.aspx#.YMpn3y1h2qA\">Orange County\u2019s Community Action Division<\/a>. \u201cWhat we\u2019re realizing now is we need to look at how planning our communities affects all residents, and if this is an increasing demographic, we need to acknowledge this and incorporate these needs into our plans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Orange County\u2019s journey to create a better quality of life for older adults began two decades ago when it formed a permanent citizen&#8217;s advisory board and office \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/orangecountyfl.net\/FAMILIESHEALTHSOCIALSVCS\/SENIORSERVICES.ASPX#.YMpYwC1h2qA\">Office and Commission on Aging<\/a> \u2013 dedicated to being the voice for seniors in the region. In August 2021, the Commission will celebrate its 20th anniversary, a milestone that marks an opportunity to begin planning for the <em>next <\/em>20 years.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative is strategically timed to take advantage of and interweave several community planning efforts underway, including the 2020 LEED for Cities and Communities Initiative and participation in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecfrpc.org\/resiliencecollaborative\">East Central Florida Regional Resilience Collaborative<\/a>. At its core, however, is building safe and secure livable communities that have affordable and appropriate resources for residents to stay active and engaged and also remain independent in their community or \u201cage in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The County also has a strong interest in incorporating the needs of elders into several masterplans slated for updating in the near future, including the parks and recreation masterplan, housing masterplan and land development code. The goal is to expand support of older residents by weaving older adult programming into core services in order to help better serve a diverse community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to support older adults to stay healthy and active, which is what this initiative hopes to achieve \u2026 a continuum of care that creates a positive aging experience,\u201d asserted Williams. \u201cThe County has done a great job remaining ahead of the curve on this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the County\u2019s Age-Friendly Initiative, contact the Office on Aging at <a href=\"mailto:OfficeonAging@ocfl.net\">OfficeonAging@ocfl.net<\/a> or 407-254-9277.
