The downtown demo garden<\/a> at the Orange County Administration building is a popular place, with more than 500,000 visitors each year. Recently it got a makeover to turn it into a Florida paradise with over 17 species of native plants. The goal: boost pollinator visits to the site, increase biodiversity and showcase sustainable gardening practices.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe makeover will improve the garden\u2019s curb appeal and help educate locals on the importance of planting native plants,\u201d said Tia Silvasy, UF\/IFAS Extension Orange County Florida-Friendly Landscaping\u2122 (FFL) agent and project leader. \u201cMost people want nice gardens, but they don\u2019t realize how easy and beneficial it is to use Florida native and Florida-Friendly plants to accomplish this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FFL Program was designed to help residents and business owners\u00a0create and maintain beautiful yards using research-based, environmentally-sustainable landscaping practices.\u00a0It also uses educational\u00a0services\u00a0that teach homeowners and landscaping professionals how to water efficiently, fertilize appropriately, manage yard pests responsibly and more.
\n\"Wild
\nSilvasy referred to the proper implementation of the nine FFL principles in yards that will protect the natural environment for future generations to enjoy:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Right plant, right place<\/li>\n
  2. Water efficiently<\/li>\n
  3. Fertilize appropriately<\/li>\n
  4. Mulch<\/li>\n
  5. \"NativeAttract wildlife<\/li>\n
  6. Manage yard pests responsibly<\/li>\n
  7. Recycle yard waste<\/li>\n
  8. Reduce stormwater runoff<\/li>\n
  9. Protect the waterfront<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    She also affirmed the benefits of Florida native and Florida-Friendly (not native but adaptable) plants in creating ecological landscapes. Florida native plants are well-adapted to the environment. Wildlife follows along, so they attract unique pollinators and insects, which provide ecological services such as eating \u201cbad\u201d bugs, continuing the plant lifecycle and pollinating for fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIt\u2019s all about the integrity of our ecosystem,\u201d explained Silvasy. \u201cWe want to have a healthy balance, so if everyone planted just a few more native plants, it would help with the biodiversity in our region.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Reducing water and fertilizer use is a major part of FFL, which incorporates the most efficient water-conserving methods into gardens and landscapes. As a rapidly growing region, Orange County understands the importance of protecting water quality.<\/p>\n

    \u201cWith growth comes the\u00a0responsibility to deliver clean drinking\u00a0water for all residents and visitors,\u201d said\u00a0Jeff Benavides, Orange County Chief Sustainability Officer.<\/strong> \u201cDramatically increasing\u00a0Florida-Friendly Landscaping countywide\u00a0will conserve\u00a0our region\u2019s water supply, increase bio-diversity and enable economic growth for local nurseries and landscape industries.\u201d<\/p>\n

    The project was funded in part by a Florida Wildflower Foundation<\/a> grant and includes partners from UF\/IFAS Extension Orange County<\/a>, Florida Master Gardener Volunteers<\/a>, Orange County Government, the Florida Native Plant Society<\/a> and Grounded Solutions, LLC.<\/p>\n
