Spearheaded by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin and activist Denis Hayes, it became a nationwide movement that inspired Americans to focus on the importance of a healthy environment. Millions of people across the country participated in the original Earth Day festivities more than 50 years ago. A growing interest in environmental action led to the U.S. government creating the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a>\u00a0and passing sweeping laws like the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/laws-regulations\/summary-clean-water-act\">Clean Water Act\u00a0<\/a>and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/laws-regulations\/summary-clean-air-act\">Clean Air Act.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today, communities, governments, and businesses worldwide come together annually to celebrate Earth Day using the\u00a0United Nation\u2019s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.This framework promotes economic development and social prosperity while protecting the planet.
