{"id":20182,"date":"2023-11-29T11:13:37","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T16:13:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/?p=20182"},"modified":"2023-11-29T11:13:37","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T16:13:37","slug":"office-for-a-drug-free-community-leads-efforts-to-curb-opioid-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/2023\/11\/office-for-a-drug-free-community-leads-efforts-to-curb-opioid-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"Office for a Drug-Free Community Leads Efforts to Curb Opioid Deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Orange County, more people died from opioid overdoses in 2022 than all other drug overdoses combined, and the importance of harm reduction \u2014 a set of practical strategies and ideas aimed at reducing negative consequences associated with drug use \u2014 has never been more evident with the current nationwide opioid epidemic and fentanyl threat.<\/p>\n<p>Harm reduction strategies are based on sound theory and academic research and draw from local expertise, and they are essential to Orange County\u2019s comprehensive approach to addressing substance use disorders through prevention, treatment, and recovery \u2014 and empowering people to reach their goals through incremental change.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/directory\/office-for-a-drug-free-community\/#:~:text=109%20E.%20Church%20St.%2C%20Suite%20405%2C%20Orlando%2C%20FL,and%20adults%20through%20prevention%2C%20education%2C%20enforcement%2C%20and%20treatment.\">Orange County Office for a Drug-Free Community<\/a> is a resource center that endorses and leads these efforts. The office, which falls under the charge of the Orange County Health Services Department and encompasses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocfl.net\/FamiliesHealthSocialSvcs\/DrugFreeCoalition.aspx\">Orange County Drug-Free Coalition<\/a>, takes a leadership role in prevention education, enforcement, treatment and recovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarm reduction emphasizes changing for good,\u201d said Dr. Thomas Hall, director, Office for a Drug-Free Community, Orange County Health Services Department. \u201cIt\u2019s a practical and transformative approach that incorporates community-driven public health strategies \u2014 including prevention, risk reduction, and health promotion \u2014 to empower people who use drugs (and their families) with the choice to live healthy, self-directed and purpose-filled lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prescription fentanyl \u2014 a highly potent synthetic opioid drug primarily used as an analgesic \u2014 is manufactured in extremely precise doses, and clinical providers carefully monitor its use. The potency of Illicit fentanyl on the street is unknown, even to the person mixing it. It is a case of trial and error, and the errors are too often fatal.<\/p>\n<p>The Drug Enforcement Agency reports that 7 in 10 counterfeit prescription pills it seizes contain a lethal dose of illicit fentanyl. A key strategy for responding to opioid overdoses is making Naloxone readily available.
