{"id":20190,"date":"2023-11-02T10:58:54","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T14:58:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/?p=20190"},"modified":"2023-11-02T10:58:54","modified_gmt":"2023-11-02T14:58:54","slug":"orange-county-construction-update-kirkman-road-extension-moving-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/2023\/11\/orange-county-construction-update-kirkman-road-extension-moving-ahead\/","title":{"rendered":"Orange County Construction Update: Kirkman Road Extension Moving Ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/orlandoinformer.com\/universal\/epic-universe\/\">Universal\u2019s Epic Universe theme park<\/a> scheduled to open by the summer of 2025, road construction has begun on the Kirkman Road extension project \u2014 the addition of 1.7 miles of road that will stretch from Carrier Drive through Sand Lake Road and down to Universal Boulevard, near the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.occc.net\/\">Orange County Convention Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a public-private partnership between Orange County, Universal and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridajobs.org\/\">Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO)<\/a>, construction actually started two years ago with underground utilities, but construction is now visible and can be seen by anyone driving by. The project is scheduled to be completed near the end of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The extension will provide another north-south corridor and ease congestion in an area that already draws millions of convention goers and tourists every year. With the anticipation of additional growth around I-Drive, the project has been in the County\u2019s long-term plans for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20192\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Project-963-SR435-Kirkman-Rd-Ext-9-5-23-05-c-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Project-963-SR435-Kirkman-Rd-Ext-9-5-23-05-c-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Project-963-SR435-Kirkman-Rd-Ext-9-5-23-05-c.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>\u201cThis will give drivers a much-needed alternate route as the area prepares to welcome Epic Universe,\u201d said Darrell Moody, Public Relations &amp; Outreach Specialist, Orange County Public Works. \u201cThis stretch can be particularly challenging with traffic, so having the ability to avoid some of that congestion will be a welcome relief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the main features of the extension is an elevated traffic circle that will keep traffic running smoothly near Universal properties. Not only will this help the flow of traffic, but the massive structure will serve as an iconic regional landmark. The project is fully multimodal, providing bicycle\/pedestrian facilities, three traffic lanes in each direction for general use, and dedicated bus lanes that will assist in distributing traffic to the theme parks. Other features will include enhanced lighting and landscaping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween major expansions to the Convention Center and Universal poised to develop on more than 750 acres of land, the extension was imperative,\u201d said Moody. \u201cWe can offer great attractions, but if people can\u2019t navigate their way to and from them in a timely and convenient manner, it defeats the purpose of having them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Orange County is providing $125 million in funding to the project, Universal $160 million and a grant from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity $16 million.
