Orange County leaders know this, and have made sidewalk safety a key focus area within the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocfl.net\/TrafficTransportation\/AcceleratedTransportationSafetyProgram.aspx\">Accelerated Transportation Safety Program<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/visionzeronetwork.org\/\">Vision Zero<\/a> initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>The County is using sales tax monies to fund $100 million in transportation needs over five years, with $55 million of this for roadway lighting, sidewalks and pedestrian safety projects. The sidewalks portion provides $25 million to address 26 miles of sidewalks in the County.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSidewalks provide a safe path for pedestrians to walk along rather than walking directly along a given roadway,\u201d said Eric Haertjens, Engineer II, <a href=\"https:\/\/ftp.orangecountyfl.net\/dept\/PhoneList\/DivisionDirectory.asp?ID=6\">Orange County Public Works Engineering<\/a>. \u201cThe likelihood of conflicts with vehicles is significantly lowered when a pedestrian is on a sidewalk rather than in the roadway.\u201d\u00a0Haertjens stressed that although these sidewalk projects are underway, pedestrians have a responsibility for their own safety just as drivers have a responsibility to be mindful of pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to be aware of your surroundings, which includes people or objects along your path on a given sidewalk, or vehicles traveling the roadway,\u201d he asserted. \u201cYou should also use signed or marked crosswalks to cross roads wherever possible, just as drivers should remember it\u2019s state law to yield to pedestrians crossing the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For more information on Orange County\u2019s transportation initiative and to access the current list of roadway lighting, sidewalk and pedestrian safety projects, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocfl.net\/TrafficTransportation\/AcceleratedTransportationSafetyProgram.aspx\">Accelerated Transportation Safety Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Completed Sidewalk Projects: <\/strong><strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/experience.arcgis.com\/experience\/ca88ac4f25c74786b0756104b11a8b5c\">Interactive Map<\/a>)<br \/>\n<\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>Last updated March 2025<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>District 2 &#8211;
