On January 31, 2025, a deadly motorcycle accident occurred on SR 46 in Lake County involving 40-year-old Christopher Smith.<\/p>\n
At the same time, an off-duty Orange County Firefighter was driving by the accident scene, with his five-year-old son in the car.\u00a0 When Firefighter\/EMT Robert Stirling noticed Smith in serious distress, he quickly pulled over and began performing CPR. Stirling performed chest compressions for close to four minutes before Lake County Fire Rescue\u2019s team made it to the scene of the accident and took over.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re always taught that CPR is our first reaction,\u201d said Sterling. \u201cAnd anyone can do it, not just firefighters\u201d<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, Smith ultimately succumbed to his injuries. However, the chest compressions performed by Stirling sustained the blood flow to his organs long enough so they were eligible for transplant. As a result, Smith\u2019s organs were eligible to be donated and saved the lives of more than 30 people.<\/p>\n
Fifteen days after the accident, Smith\u2019s family came out to Lake County Fire Station 39 to meet Sterling, as well as the Lake County Fire Rescue crew that answered the call.<\/p>\n
Smith has been described by friends and family as someone who positively impacted many lives, and by being an organ donor, he has made a life-saving difference for dozens more.<\/p>\n
Although the accident represents a terrible tragedy, Smith\u2019s family, as well as Stirling and the firefighters involved, recognize that by choosing to be an organ donor, Smith has granted others both hope and new beginnings.<\/p>\n
