With crystal clear springs, a mile-long lazy river, remote camping and acres of lush preserve, Orange County\u2019s landmark Kelly Park has become a go-to for locals and tourists worldwide.<\/p>\n

The beauty of Rock Springs, the centerpiece of Kelly Park, was not lost on its namesake, Dr. Howard A. Kelly. In 1910, the prominent physician, naturalist, and founding professor at Johns Hopkins Hospital visited the picturesque oasis and immediately fell in love with it. Kelly recognized the area\u2019s ecological value and purchased the land, designating it as a bird sanctuary and wildlife preserve. In 1927, Kelly and his wife gifted 200 acres to Orange County with the stipulation that it remain a public park.<\/p>\n

The land and its resources have served many purposes throughout history, from a Native settlement to powering early manufacturing. The park was awarded a state historical marker in 2016 to honor its rich history.<\/p>\n

Kelly Park\u2019s roots run deep. The rushing spring emerges from limestone rich with fossils dating back 17 million years. The site is also a place of profound historical and spiritual significance to Florida\u2019s original inhabitants, including the Timucua Indians.<\/p>\n

In 1855, the state of Florida awarded land near Rock Springs to war veteran William S. Delk. He owned the area\u2019s largest estate and used Rock Springs Run to power his grist mill, sawmill, and cotton gin. Delk\u2019s heirs later sold the land for lumbering.<\/p>\n

Current-day visitors flock to the park\u2014now some 355 acres\u2014for swimming and floating in its refreshing year-round 68-degree running spring. \u00a0Guests often line up as early as 5 a.m. as the park reaches capacity most days.<\/p>\n

Summer hours for Kelly Park are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the waterfront closing at 7 p.m. Cost is $3 per vehicle. Visitors can bring floats or rafts; rental options are available outside of the park.<\/p>\n

Some 26 campsites include a campfire ring, grill, picnic table, water and electric. \u00a0For group camping reservations or pavilion rentals, email\u00a0KellyCamping@ocfl.net<\/a>. For non-county residents, campsites are $23 and $17.25 for seniors 55+. Residents of Orange County can enjoy savings with prices at $18 and $13.50.<\/p>\n
