It is an investment unmatched by most counties in Florida. Under the leadership of Mayor Jerry L. Demings, this commitment, funded through property taxes, reflects a deeply held belief that a safe community is the foundation for prosperity, growth and quality of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic safety is government\u2019s first and most important responsibility,\u201d said Mayor Demings. \u201cFrom fire rescue to corrections to law enforcement, we\u2019re investing in the people, technology and infrastructure that protect our residents every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since 2019, the County has strengthened every aspect of its public safety system \u2014 modernizing fire stations and training centers, improving jail operations and inmate care, upgrading 911 systems, and providing state-of-the-art tools and facilities for law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>More than 50 percent of all new County positions added since 2020 have been in public safety agencies \u2014 the Sheriff\u2019s Office, Fire Rescue, and Corrections \u2014 ensuring faster response times, safer streets and stronger community partnerships.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Fire Rescue: Saving Lives with Innovation and Investment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-23173\" src=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/53896931985_1ceb3bddbe_o-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/53896931985_1ceb3bddbe_o-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/53896931985_1ceb3bddbe_o-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/53896931985_1ceb3bddbe_o-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/53896931985_1ceb3bddbe_o-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/53896931985_1ceb3bddbe_o-1-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/53896931985_1ceb3bddbe_o-1-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/53896931985_1ceb3bddbe_o-1-785x523.jpg 785w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangecountyfl.net\/EmergencySafety\/FireRescue.aspx\">Orange County Fire Rescue Department<\/a> has achieved historic advancements in staffing, equipment and emergency response capabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Through strategic investments, OCFRD has expanded resources, modernized operations and strengthened its workforce. The department now maintains four-person crews on all apparatus, a move that has significantly reduced response times and improved outcomes in fire suppression, search and rescue, and emergency medical response.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, major capital improvements include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$52 million state-of-the-art Fire Training Center<\/li>\n<li>$4.2 million <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ocfl.net\/2024\/05\/eye-on-orange-county-emergency-operations-center-modernized-for-hurricane-season\/\">Emergency Operations Center renovation<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Six new fire stations opened (Stations 67, 87, 68, 44, 80, and 48)<\/li>\n<li>Four additional fire stations projected to expand services and keep up with growth, in addition to one fire station rebuild<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wage increases and labor agreements have kept firefighter salaries among the most competitive in Central Florida, with planned adjustments from 35 percent to 41 percent over the next few fiscal years ensuring that skilled professionals remain on the job.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, OCFRD launched its Whole Blood Program, providing pre-hospital transfusions that have already saved multiple lives in trauma situations. The County also completed a mid-year salary adjustment in 2025, giving Orange County the highest-paid entry-level correctional officers in Central Florida \u2014 a whopping 51.9 percent increase since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Capital improvements have further strengthened security and efficiency, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$17.3 million in control room, camera, and access system upgrades<\/li>\n<li>$10.5 million for a new Jail Management System<\/li>\n<li>$24.5 million for a planned state-of-the-art Training Center<\/li>\n<li>$3.5 million to renovate the Booking &amp; Release area, improving search processes and reducing contraband risks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additional investments include new secure transportation vehicles, $2.5 million in staff safety equipment, and a Medication-Assisted Treatment Clinic offering advanced mental health and telehealth services for inmates. Since 2018, the agency\u2019s budget has increased by $149 million<strong> \u2014 <\/strong>a 63.9 percent rise \u2014 reflecting the County\u2019s sustained investment in law enforcement excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the Sheriff\u2019s Office has 2,752 authorized full-time positions, not accounting for vacancies, including 1,939 sworn deputies, who serve one of the fastest-growing populations in Florida. These numbers include all funding sources.<\/p>\n<p>Major capital projects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$27.3 million Sector V Substation to serve the tourist corridor<\/li>\n<li>$19.5 million Evidence Facility<\/li>\n<li>$3.5 million Criminal Investigations Division renovation<\/li>\n<li>911 Call Center upgrades to improve emergency response<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Technology continues to be a cornerstone of OCSO\u2019s strategy. In 2024, deputies received new Taser 10s, Glock 47s, and AB4 body-worn cameras to enhance safety and accountability. The results from Orange County\u2019s investments speak for themselves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>16 percent overall crime reduction in 2024<\/li>\n<li>82 percent homicide clearance rate, including 11 cold case resolutions<\/li>\n<li>Expanded community outreach through initiatives such as <em>Haitian Connect<\/em> and <em>Senior Connect<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Over $750,000 distributed to local nonprofits from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cPublic safety investments pay measurable dividends,\u201d said Mayor Demings. \u201cCrime is down, response times are faster and our residents are safer because we continue to prioritize people, training and technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A Record of Results and a Vision for the Future<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Orange County\u2019s commitment to public safety goes beyond infrastructure and payroll \u2014 it is about long-term community trust and resilience.<\/p>\n<p>From lifesaving fire rescue programs to modern correctional facilities and innovative policing, the County\u2019s integrated approach to safety delivers results.
