Through the Office of the EMS Medical Director, the County manages one of the region\u2019s most robust automated external defibrillator (AED) programs, overseeing 329 devices installed at more than 70 County facilities.<\/p>\n<p>While there is no legal requirement for AEDs in government buildings, Orange County\u2019s leadership has made it a priority to equip public spaces with these life-saving devices \u2014 and to keep them updated with the latest technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrange County has been proactive when it comes to public safety for quite some time,\u201d said Amanda Freeman, Disaster Health and Medical Manager for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangecountyfl.net\/EmergencySafety\/EmergencyMedicalServices.aspx\">Office of the EMS Medical Director<\/a>, part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangecountyfl.net\/familieshealthsocialsvcs.aspx\">Orange County Health Services<\/a>. \u201cAEDs are a critical part of the cardiac chain of survival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s latest project upgraded existing devices with new, better-equipped units that can be monitored remotely and send alerts when maintenance or troubleshooting is needed. The units also notify the team in real time whenever one is used.<\/p>\n<p>AEDs \u2014 automated external defibrillators \u2014 are compact, easy-to-use medical devices designed to help someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The device analyzes the heart\u2019s rhythm and, if necessary, delivers an electrical shock to help the heart re-establish a normal rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a sophisticated yet simple device,\u201d explained Mat Glaess, Project Coordinator. \u201cThe instructions are clear and easy to follow, even for someone with no medical training. It\u2019s important for everyone to know what an AED is and how to use it, because that knowledge could make the difference in saving someone\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone, anytime, regardless of age or health history. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/why-give?s_src=26D511AEMG&amp;s_subsrc=fy26_sem_google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=pmax_master&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_content=&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=22319567022&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADfYbP47MkEvmx7_EsegkoNPZOO5f&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiA7LzLBhAgEiwAjMWzCCh_esBI-tPF4Flz1SPtzDdBpIhBp-F1u5fyKAPGu78lX9tPYSAk1RoCSvAQAvD_BwE\">American Heart Association<\/a>, survival rates dramatically increase when CPR and defibrillation are administered within the first few minutes of an episode \u2014 underscoring the importance of having AEDs readily available in public places.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese efforts reflect Orange County\u2019s commitment to health and safety across all departments,\u201d said Amanda Freeman. \u201cWe want to ensure that everyone who visits or works in our facilities is in a safe environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moving forward, the Office of the Medical Director will continue to promote AED adoption in County facilities where they are not yet installed. Freeman also encourages residents to consider learning CPR and basic AED operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAEDs are user-friendly and provide step-by-step directions,\u201d she said. \u201cBut we always recommend residents take a CPR class.
