Orange County, FL<\/strong> – In an effort to find more forever homes for homeless animals this summer, shelters from Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties entered into their first adoption challenge. Summer months are peak breading seasons often leaving shelters at maximum capacity or over capacity. In addition to dedicated rescues accepting animals into foster and permanent homes, Central Florida shelters are expanding efforts to find four-legged friends new loving families. At the end of the summer season, the tri-county area shelters will compare adoption percentages from the previous year to 2016, and name the victor. Even with months to go, the friendly rivalry has begun. While final percentages will ultimately award victory, all agree the true winners will be the homeless animals and their new families.<\/p>\n

In an effort to extend the challenge beyond Central Florida, Orange County released a video challenge<\/a> to their colleagues in Palm Beach County, asking them to also increase their pet adoptions this summer.<\/p>\n

On any given day, Orange County Animal Services, the largest of the three shelters, reports that on average as many as 50 animals are surrendered or rescued by animal service officers. During the summer, those numbers can double. The Summer Adoption Challenge will offer adoption promotions and educational outreach. Adoption fees at the shelters will be reduced by 50 percent and personnel will be encouraging spay and neuter programs.<\/p>\n
