Orange County, Fla.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0The Metropolitan \u201cMetro\u201d Fire Chiefs Association<\/a><\/u>, a section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), held its 2017 annual conference in Orange County, Fla. from April 7-13. Approximately 120 fire chiefs from metropolitan fire departments in the U.S., Canada, China, South Africa and the United Kingdom attended the conference and elected the Section\u2019s 2017-2018 officers and board members.<\/p>\n

Orange County Fire Chief Otto Drozd III was elected president of the organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am honored to lead this distinguished group of my peers as we discuss major issues affecting the fire service in the U.S. and throughout the world,\u201d said Chief Drozd. \u201cIt is a privilege to represent Orange County in leading significant national conversations on policies and best practices that advance the fire\/emergency medical services profession and impact the international community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chief Drozd\u2019s term began April 13, 2017.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so proud to see Chief Drozd recognized and elected to serve as president of the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association,\u201d said Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, who spoke at the conference\u2019s opening ceremony. \u201cChief Drozd represents the exceptional quality of leadership we have among Orange County\u2019s public safety management team. He serves as a reflection of the extraordinary men and women who comprise the Orange County Fire Rescue Department.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the conference, a comprehensive educational program included updates and presentations on numerous topics focusing on the following three major themes: Fire Dynamics and Data; Occupational Health and Safety with emphasis on cancer and mental health; and Terrorism\/Active Shooter Response.<\/p>\n

Acting USFA Administrator Dr. Denis Onieal, IAFC President and Chair of the Board Chief John Sinclair, IAFC CEO and Executive Director Mark Light, NFPA President and CEO Jim Pauley, and Chief Roy Wilsher, Chair of the United Kingdom National Fire Chiefs Council were among the many dignitaries addressing the chiefs. Also during the conference, Metro President Rhoda Mae Kerr signed a Memorandum of Understanding with President Dino Padayachee of the South African Emergency Services Institute.<\/p>\n
