With a current population of 539 dogs and cats, in addition to 102 animals in foster homes, Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) is feeling the full impact of the summer breeding season. While more than 100 adoptions took place this past weekend, the shelter is near capacity, prompting officials to put the call out that adoptive homes are urgently needed.

The shelter team, volunteers, rescue partners, foster parents and adoptive families are doing everything they can to help OCAS ensure animals find the right homes as quickly as possible. On average, OCAS accepts as many as 50 dogs and cats a day – a number that can double during the summer.

In an effort to increase adoptions, many animals have already been vaccinated, spayed and neutered – and are ready to go home with a new family today! Adoption fees have been reduced to just $10. The shelter is also currently featuring animals that have been at the shelter for more than 10 days through their social media channels. Adoption fees for these featured pets have been waived. To learn more about dogs and cats available at OCAS, visit us online or on Facebook at Facebook.com/OrangeCountyAnimalServices. OCAS remains a safe haven for all animals; officials still want to remind individuals no longer able to care for a dog or cat to please exhaust all efforts to find the animal a permanent and loving home prior to surrendering to Orange County Animal Services.

Elevated shelter populations place a considerable strain on resources, as well as space at shelters like OCAS, which is the county’s only open admission shelter – meaning they do not turn away any dog or cat. With the need to balance the health and well-being of hundreds of animals every single day, ensuring that the shelter remains just a temporary safe haven before an animal finds a loving home is mission critical.

Not able to adopt? Consider:

Fostering an animal.

Volunteering at a shelter.

Sharing social media posts of featured animals.

Spay and neuter your pet.

Microchip and register all family pets.

Urgent Need for Adoptive Homes, Adoption Fees Reduced or Waived Orange County, FL – Summer months include the peak breeding season among homeless and stray animals, which can easily spike an open admission shelter’s population overnight.
