Orlando Ballet Awarded Cultural Tourism Grant for Contributions to Orange County’s Cultural Identity

Orange County’s Cultural Tourism grant program continues to fuel the region’s growing arts landscape, and this year, Orlando Ballet stands among its honored recipients.

Administered through the County’s La Oficina de Asuntos Artísticos y Culturales and funded by a percentage of the Impuesto al Desarrollo Turístico, the grant program supports nonprofit arts organizations that elevate Orange County as both a cultural destination and a place where residents can experience world-class creative work.

What began in 2002 with four organizations receiving a combined $471,582 has grown significantly. This year, 39 organizations were awarded grants of up to $190,000 each, totaling $5.1 million - the largest investment in the program's history. Since 2023, recipients have been formally recognized through the ACT Awards.

For Orlando Ballet, the award reinforces its role as a cornerstone of Central Florida’s performing arts community.

"For us to receive this grant is incredibly meaningful," said Brad Renner, executive director of Orlando Ballet. "It reflects a community that understands the value of the arts and the role they play in shaping a vibrant and thriving region."

Founded in 1974, Orlando Ballet has grown into the largest producing arts organization in Central Florida, operating with an annual budget exceeding $12 million. Each season, the company presents five mainstage productions at the Centro de Artes Escénicas Dr. Phillips, featuring 28 professional dancers and a second company of rising artists.

Audience engagement continues to accelerate. Last season, Orlando Ballet welcomed 42,000 patrons. This year, attendance has already reached that benchmark midway through the season, signaling what Renner describes as a period of historic momentum for the organization.

"In a time when entertainment is available instantly and globally, we're seeing more people choose to experience live performance," said Renner. "That speaks to the power of shared artistic experiences."

Beyond the mainstage, Orlando Ballet's reach extends deeply into the community. Orlando Ballet School supports more than 600 families locally and attracts students from across the nation and abroad. The school's summer intensive program draws more than 350 students, with the majority coming from outside Central Florida.

In addition, the organization brings sustained arts education into 48 public schools annually through 10- to 20-week residencies. Each year, 15,000 second graders attend a live performance of The Nutcracker, ensuring every child in Orange County experiences professional ballet during their formative years.

"The funding we receive through the grant is vital," explained Renner. "It allows us to broaden our visibility and invite more people - both residents and visitors - to experience what we do."

As Orange County evolves, Orlando Ballet continues to help shape its artistic voice,  demonstrating that a thriving cultural community is essential to the region’s long-term identity and vitality.
